Burger experts from street food stalls and nationwide restaurants have been selected as the 16 finalists of the National Burger Awards 2019.
Chefs from businesses such as Pint Shop, Ed’s Easy Diner and Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen will now compete in a live cook-off next month.
Returning to Islington Metal Works, London, on 20 February, the National Burger Awards final will see chefs recreate the burger that they entered the competition with, looking to win National Burger of the Year title and the £1,000 prize that comes with it.
In order to do this, the burger needs to win over the panel of expert judges, which includes Pas Loucaides, owner of Cut + Grind, which won last year’s competition; Glenn Evans, head of food development at Las Iguanas; Matthew Burgess, group executive chef at Caravan; The Telegraph food columnist Xanthe Clay; and Tristan O’Hana, editorial director of Casual Dining Magazine.
The 16 chefs will also take part in a Technical Round that will see them create a burger using ingredients supplied by the event’s sponsors, to be named Burger Chef of the Year.
“The National Burger Awards is now in its fifth year and whittling the entries down to just 16 has not gotten any easier,” says O’Hana. “This year, we opened the entries to street food traders, as well as pubs, restaurants and hotels, in response to the great quality of burgers that you can find in markets across the country. This only boosted our opinion that the UK knows how to do a great burger – finding the best one of them all is going to be a tough but enjoyable challenge.”
The National Burger Awards 2019 is sponsored by Americana, Artis, Danish Crown, Electrolux Professional, Farm Frites, Hellmann’s, Kühne and Startle.
