Research from New York Bakery co. highlighted this when they surveyed 500 consumers on their purchasing preferences out of home. When choosing sandwich carriers from a selection of images most consumers chose a seeded or cheese topped bread.

Inclusions and toppings add to the appearance, taste and texture of a burger or sandwich carrier and can drive consumer decision at the point of purchase. New York Bakery’s Multigrain bagel is one of its fastest growing flavours for this reason, as well as its appeal as a healthier option. The company also just launched a cheese topped bun to help development chefs add indulgence to burgers and sandwiches. Taste panels suggested that 3 out 5 consumers would choose the cheese topped bun from a menu when eating out. With so many options when it comes to fillings in it can be easy to forget that around 2/3rds of a sandwich or burger is the bread carrier. Upgrading the carrier can make menu items more appealing and justify a higher price point.
