Is commitment to technology in the UK all talk?

Talk to any supplier to the casual dining sector and they’ll all hail the vital importance of technology to drive efficiencies and that all-important guest experience.

However, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has stated that low take up of available technologies is fuelling the UK’s ongoing productivity problems. Is the hospitality industry seriously lagging behind when it comes to adopting tech?

To improve understanding and access to the right technology, the UK government is providing £2m to fund 15 projects aimed at helping businesses. It’s hoped a collaboration between the Greater London Authority, CognitionX, Capital Enterprise and the London School of Economics will boost adoption of artificial intelligence technology across hospitality and retail.

So, why is the industry resistant to implementing tech solutions? Naturally, cost is an initial barrier. Additionally, we have economic uncertainties with Brexit and huge rises in costs.

The trick is to establish what the business genuinely needs – this can’t be about following the pack. It has to add value to your business. Look at the pain-points to identify and swiftly implement a robust solution which eliminates issues, whilst enhancing profitability. There are some excellent tech possibilities for casual dining operators, which translate into a fantastic return on investment.

Some are must-haves, driven by consumer expectations and others should form the backbone to any business. What’s crucial is that systems are able to integrate with one another to provide seamless, efficient communications. So, as a sector, let’s stop talking the talk and start walking the walk.
