The Double Cheeseburger from Bleecker has been named as the best burger in the UK, after the London-based business stormed the 2020 National Burger Awards.
Cooked up by Celine Raeburn, who manages Bleecker’s Spitalfields site, the Double Cheeseburger was crowned greatest in the UK after seeing off competition from 15 other burgers, all of which were cooked, served, tasted and judged at the live final in London.
“This will reinforce our burgers in people’s minds as one of the best, if not the best,” says Raeburn, pictured below with DJ BBQ and Tristan O’Hana, editor of Casual Dining Magazine. “Hopefully we’ll see a lot of footfall after the win and people will keep coming down to see us at all our sites. I’m super happy and really excited. I was very nervous, but I’m just happy that the burger came through and tasted as good as it does in the shop.”
The Bleecker Double Cheeseburger (pictured above) keeps things simple, made up of two 4oz native breed patties, two slices of American cheese, onion and some Bleecker house sauce.
Other winners on the day were Gareth Attwell from Big Boys Fine Burgers in Kent, who was named Burger Chef of the Year; Guy Greaves from The Botanist, who cooked up the Vegan Burger of the Year; and Wayne Handley from Bun Club, who won the Bloggers’ Choice Award, an accolade judged by a group of food bloggers from across the hospitality industry.
The National Burger Awards 2020 Grand Final was held on 19 February at Islington Metal Works in London and was hosted by Christian Stevenson (AKA DJ BBQ). Sixteen finalists competed in three rounds that saw them cook a Technical Burger, which was made with ingredients supplied by the event’s sponsors; a vegan burger, featuring products from The Meatless Farm Co; and their own-recipe burger that they submitted during the entry process.
The National Burger Awards 2020 was sponsored by Americana, Arla Pro, BrewDog, Dalston’s, Danish Crown, Diversey, Electrolux Professional, Frobisher’s, Farm Frites, Hellmann’s, Kühne and The Meatless Farm Co.
